One of the rarest Porsches ever built is the 911R. This was an extreme lightweight variation developed in 1966, based on the then newly released 911. Porsche focused primarily on weight reduction, and every single component was replaced by a lightweight counterpart. Most of the panels were refabricated in fiberglass, including doors, bonnet and engine cover. All the standard interior items were deleted, and the glass side windows were replaced by lightweight perspex. Total weight of the 911R was only 810 kg, while the engine produced a healthy 210 bhp. Unfortunately the R did never meet the intended class requirements, and had to race in the prototype class. Alongside competition such as the seven-liter Ford GT40, the 911R never got its honest chance at victory until the Tour de France relaunch in 1969. A single car was entered in the race by the factory with Gerard Larousse behind the wheel. The agility of the 911 helped him take the overall victory through a mixture of hillclimb and road courses. Porsche only made 20 customer cars and 4 prototypes, which makes a total of 24 examples. That is indeed a rare Porsche !

This example is based on a 1966 car, originally delivered in Pisa (Italy). The car left the factory as a standard 911, finished in the colour Hell Elfenbein. It was imported in Belgium in 2007, and then completely restored and rebuild to 911R specifications by a well known Porsche specialist. It must be said that a fantastic job was done : all panels are correctly made in fiberglass, front and rear bumpers replaced by the correct ones, and even the front and distinctive rear lights are to 911R specification. Inside, everything is stripped to the necessary items, and the whole cabine oozes an atmosphere of sixties racing cars. The engine has been tweaked with Weber 40 carburettors, double ignition and an agressively sounding exhaust system. Brakes and suspension are improved as well to cope with the increased power. Just starting this Porsche gives already goosebumps !

Building such a 911R replica based on a proper 1966 car is now almost impossible for the amount we are asking for this wonderful car. This is a true opportunity for a Porsche aficionado who wants something very special to participate in historical events, or just to have lots of fun on the road with a nice early 911. Ample power, the right looks and a wild soundtrack : that is exactly what a 911 should be.
